Public Broadcasting System (PBS) has produced a series
about different breeds of dogs. The series World of Dogs aired
this fall. Five of the featured breeds are Beagles, Poodles, Rottweilers,
Chihuahuas, and German Shepherd Dogs. Portions of the segments of these
breeds were filmed on the premises of Woodland West Pet Resort. Ross and
I were also interviewed about general pet care. Many of the dogs filmed
at the pet resort were Champion titled show dogs, and obedience and
agility dogs.
We were also contacted by the Arts and Entertainment
(A&E) cable station about participating in a feature about the career
and lifestyle of a professional dog handler, part of a thirteen segment
series on various professions, also aired this fall. During the same
week that PBS filmed at the pet resort, A&E spent five days taping
pre-show preparation and joined us for the weekend shows. Forty hours of
tape was condensed into twenty minutes of airtime. It is based on the
daily routine and events of a Dog Show Handler, explaining how dog shows
work, and enlightening the public about the sport of dog shows. The
filming took place at Woodland West Pet Resort and the Bee-Tex Kennel
Club dog show in Beeville, TX. All of our show dogs performed great on
camera. Also interviewed were many of our clients, assistants, staff
members, other professional handlers, judges, and spectators at the
show.
Some of our highlights were my daughter Kimberly
earning a nice win with her Beagle puppy, and Woody the Rhodesian
Ridgeback winning the Hound Group and competing for Best in Show.
This was a very enlightening experience for all and we
hope it will be a great show for the dog show enthusiast and the general
viewing audience.
